San Marino achieved their first competitive victory after a 20-year drought, defeating Liechtenstein.

San Marino made history for the 177th time, winning their first competitive match.

Until Thursday night, the minnows had five draws and 171 defeats to show for their decades of competition in UEFA and FIFA tournaments, but the long wait is over.

Nicko Sensoli, a 19-year-old who spent last season on loan in Italy's Serie D, scored early in the second half to help San Marino defeat Liechtenstein 1-0 in the Nations League.

It is only the second time in the country's history that they have won a match, with the last victory being against Liechtenstein in 2024.

There have been suggestions that San Marino, the world's fifth-smallest country with a population of roughly 33,000, is growing more competitive, with Denmark defeating them 2-1 in a Euro 2024 qualifier last year.
