Why Club Brugge and Viking FK Deserved Their Historic Champions League Points.

European football has a habit of explaining an unexpected result through the shortcomings of the favourite. A heavyweight drops points, and the discussion immediately turns to complacency, poor defending or an unfortunate evening. The opponent becomes a supporting character in its own achievement. Club Brugge and Viking FK deserve better than that after a remarkable Champions League night: Brugge defeated Inter 4–3 in Milan, while Viking held Bayern Munich to a 3–3 draw in Norway. Three points for one, a breakthrough point for the other, and a reminder that reputation cannot finish a match on its own. These results should not be flattened into a single underdog story. Brugge are an experienced European club, accustomed to navigating demanding fixtures and competing beyond Belgium’s borders. Viking’s achievement carried a different significance: after losing their opening league-phase match, they earned their first point of the campaign against Bayern. Their journeys were different, but...

Five things from the exciting Champions League action on Wednesday.

After a 120-minute fight between Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid, the Champions League is now down to the final eight clubs. After the most dramatic shootout, Rüdiger dismisses Atleti. Even for the neutral, the penalty shootout was tense. Atleti has never defeated its fierce rivals in Champions League play, yet the two teams are from the same city. This was as dramatic as they get after Marcos Llorente and Lucas Vásquez missed, and Julian Álvarez's penalty was disallowed by VAR for a double kick. Antonio Rüdiger, a central defender, walked up knowing that the match would be finished if he scored. The shot had so much force that it continued into the back of the net even after Jan Oblak got a hand to it. The competition's winners will face Arsenal in the quarterfinals. Can they repeat the entire journey? Super-sub Asensio The January loan signing of Marco Asensio from PSG by Aston Villa has proven to be a brilliant move. After substituting against Club Brugge to...

Five things we learned from the first night of UCL Round of 16 action.

The Champions League Round of 16 began in earnest this evening as the newly formatted competition moves forward. Following the shock exits of European giants Manchester City and Juventus in the playoff round, much of the same could be expected in the competition's next two weeks. Unsung heroes reveal why Real are the kings of Europe Real Madrid leads after a 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Atlético de Madrid in front of home fans at the Bernabeu, with both clubs demonstrating how closely contested this tie was always going to be. Carlo Ancelotti relied on a group of unsung heroes, not just big names like Kylian Mbappé or Vinícius Júnior, to deliver results. Rodrygo opened the scoring for Los Blancos, and Brahim Díaz's second-half goal sealed the victory. Federico Valverde was also instrumental, as he continues to excel as a right-back while also setting up Rodrygo's early goal. Even when their stars aren't firing on all cylinders, Real Madrid still performs whe...

Have Celtic scored the worst own goal of the season? 😅.

Celtic will have to overcome a catastrophic error in the first half of their Champions League match on Wednesday. And quick. The Scottish club welcomed Club Brugge to town and gave the visitors the lead after an own goal. Cameron Carter Vickers, a central defender, was harassed by Maxim De Cuyper in his box and attempted to send the ball to goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. But his teammate was far away from the goal, and the ball trickled in as the Celtic player quickly buried his face in his hands. Is this the worst (or best?) own goal of the season already?

Pulisic scores directly from a corner in UCL, continuing Milan's impressive record 👏.

Christian Pulisic has had a fantastic start to the season with Milan, and that continued tonight as he scored immediately from a corner against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League. With his team struggling in the first half against the Belgian champions, and having lost their first two games in the competition, the American offered the inspiration he has so frequently done since signing from Chelsea in the 34th minute. His inswinging corner missed everyone, including his teammates and the Club Brugge goalkeeper, and ended up in the net. The 26-year-old now has seven goals for the season, and he appears to be on track to beat his previous season's total of 15. Brugge equalized early in the second half, suggesting Pulisic may need to step up again for Milan.
