Lee Carsley admits 'relief' after handing over England position to Thomas Tuchel.

Interim England manager Lee Carsley was relieved to secure Nations League promotion with a stunning send-off against the Republic of Ireland, and he will now prepare a presentation for new manager Thomas Tuchel.

Gareth Southgate ended his eight-year tenure in July after losing a second consecutive European Championship final, prompting the Football Association to provisionally promote the Under-21 manager.

Carsley experienced ups and downs during a three-camp caretaker spell with England's senior squad, punctuated by triumphs against the country he represented as a player.

Harry Kane scored from the penalty after Ireland defender Liam Scales was booked for a second time just after halftime, while Anthony Gordon, Conor Gallagher, Jarrod Bowen, and debutant Taylor Harwood-Bellis all scored their first international goals in a 5-0 victory.

That result, combined with Thursday's 3-0 triumph in Athens, secured their return to the Nations League top flight thanks to a better head-to-head record after finishing level on 15 points with Greece.

"It's fair to say there's some relief," Carsley remarked.

"If we had spoken at the beginning of the campaign, we would have stated you were expected to be promoted, but it is difficult.

"No team has given us a free pass and allowed us to continue. It has been difficult for me personally, as I am sure it has for the workers. It's great that we concluded the campaign with such a fantastic performance.

"We discussed not only achieving promotion from the Nations League, but also potentially increasing the pool of players Thomas can choose from.

Thomas Tuchel starts his duties as England manager on January 1.

"The challenge now for the guys who have been part in the last three camps is to be in and around the March squad.

"A lot of them have done themselves a lot of good in terms of improving their reputation for their potential to play in the England senior team, and earning a cap is no small task. I'm pretty proud of several of them.

A massive 'thank you' to Carsley was flashed on the Wembley screens at full-time, when Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham issued a message of gratitude.

"I would like to thank Lee Carsley and his coaching team for their hard work and results in the last six games," remarked the opponent.

"Lee has achieved the main goal of the six fixtures this autumn: promotion back to the Nations League's top tier."

"He has selected some interesting new players and will give Thomas Tuchel and Anthony Barry a thorough briefing as they begin work on our qualifying campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"The players have really liked working with Lee and his crew; they have had a significant influence in their interim duties.

"Lee will now return to the Under-21s and will continue to play an important part in the senior team by nurturing England's brightest young players.

Lee Carsley spent six games in charge of England.

"His leadership and coaching gives us the best possible chance of back-to-back U21 Euro wins next summer, and he will continue to play a big part in elite football development across the FA."

Tuchel's formal start date with England is January 1, and Carsley intends to meet with the former Chelsea manager as soon as possible to provide him with information.

"I'm trying to put together, with the rest of the staff, a debrief on all three camps," he told me.

"I'll put together a document, and perhaps see him to present what we think and what we've discovered.

England rioted at Wembley Stadium.

"Our duty as Under-21s personnel is to assist the senior manager as much as possible, to find out what he requires and how we can assist.

"I'm really comfortable in that job. I'm looking forward to meeting him in the coming weeks.

Carsley avoided the topic of whether he would like to return to lead England's senior team in the future, instead focused on the present.

"It's a job that deserves an elite coach with a track record of winning and Thomas has got that," according to him.

"The benefit would be that we've expanded the pool of players. I am confident that selecting the next squad will be a difficult task. "Exciting times ahead."
