Carla Ward, who previously managed Sheffield United, Birmingham City, and Aston Villa, has been named the Republic of Ireland's head coach.
She will oversee the team until the end of the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup campaign, starting with a UEFA Nations League game against Turkey at Tallaght Stadium next month.
Ward told fai.com, "I'm very excited to get started with the Ireland Women's National Team." This is an incredible opportunity, not only with the National Team, but also to contribute to the excellent work being done to grow women's and girls' football.
"Over the next two and a half years, as we build towards the World Cup, we can make a real difference and I'm looking forward to getting started."
FAI Chief Football Officer Marc Canham stated, "We are delighted to name a Head Coach of Carla's calibre. To be able to secure such a high-quality coach demonstrates our vision for our Women's National Team's future.
"We are thrilled to have found someone who possesses the passion, commitment, and skill set that we sought during the recruitment process. Carla's coaching expertise, along with her ability to bring out the best in people around her, distinguished her as our top candidate, and we are convinced that she will be an excellent choice."
FAI CEO David Courell stated, "We chose Carla because she possesses the ideal combination of expertise and experience to deliver on our ambition to qualify for major tournaments, compete against the best teams in the world, and continue to grow support for the women's game in Ireland." I am very happy to help Carla and the team on their adventure."
Ward will be assisted by Alan Mahon (assistant coach) and Emma Byrne (goalkeeping coach). Mahon is a former Ireland international who spent over ten years as Assistant Manager of the Manchester City Women's Team, while Byrne, the team's all-time appearance leader, returns to the coaching staff.
