Manchester United have exercised their option to extend Harry Maguire's contract, keeping the former captain at Old Trafford until 2026.
Maguire joined United for £80 million in 2019, a world record fee for a defender, but was stripped of his captaincy by previous manager Erik ten Hag in 2023. However, he battled his way back into the lineup last season, and with Amorim preferring to play a back three, he has started all three of their recent games.
Maguire signed an initial six-year contract with United, with the club having the option to extend it for an additional season, and Amorim stated: "Harry Maguire, we are going to activate our option. I spoke with him this morning and told him that he needed to enhance his game on the pitch.
"We need him a lot, and he needs to grow as a leader. We are all aware of his status here, but we need him right now, therefore we will gladly exercise the choice."
West Ham and United agreed on a sum for Maguire in 2023, but the England international elected to stay, and Amorim commended him for how he handled losing his place and the armband.
"There are moments in the career of a player that are different, and I think he coped very well with his struggles," she said.

It is hoped that Amad Diallo would be the next Red Devils player to extend his contract.
Amad has entered the final few months of the contract he signed when he joined United in 2021. The Ivorian has been an important player for Amorim, playing as a right wing back or winger, and the Portuguese are hopeful that a new contract will be signed. "Amad is near," he said.
Marcus Rashford, who returned to the squad for Monday's defeat against Newcastle after missing the previous four games, will miss Sunday's trip to Anfield.
"He's ill right now," Amorim explained. "He's not training. We'll see in the future, but this is just like a regular gamer, and then I make a choice. So, it is the same. I think he'll be released this week."
