Liverpool defeated Arsenal 1-0 in a fierce match to complete the upset of the Women's FA Cup quarterfinals. The Reds advanced to the semi-finals for the first time since the 2016–17 campaign thanks to a winner in the 78th minute that was a rebounding own goal off the unfortunate Daphne van Domselaar.
After a turbulent ten days following Matt Beard's departure, interim manager Amber Whiteley praised her team's performance.
Whiteley remarked, "I am so happy for everyone today." "Over the past few weeks, they have worked really hard. A significant shift occurred. The system has been modified. They've had to absorb a lot of knowledge in a short period of time, and they've just been excellent in how they've used it both today and last week.
"I believed we were excellent from beginning to end. We were really well-prepared. We significantly reduced their opportunities in front of goal when we had the ball. Rachael Laws, I believe, only made one save. I believe we put them in danger. We had good chances, and I believe we should be considered for the next round.
Whiteley managed to stick with the same starting lineup from the team's 1-0 league victory over Crystal Palace the week before, and they benefited greatly from the personnel's stability. Beth Mead, Caitlin Foord, and Kyra Cooney-Cross were the three new players brought in by Arsenal manager Renée Slegers. Because the England international was cup-tied, the Gunners were unable to call up Chloe Kelly.
Since the first whistle, Liverpool's strategy and relentless press have caused disruptions, making it difficult for Arsenal to get any momentum. The hosts were unable to get a shot on goal throughout the first half due to the visitors' effective use of closing off the key midfield spaces.
When given the chance to advance, Whiteley's team appeared to be on the rise. Olivia Smith was a constant threat because of how quickly she stretched the Arsenal defense. During a calm and scuffled first half in which both teams exchanged possession, she produced the game's first effort.
Throughout the first half, there weren't many opportunities, and a string of fouls further disrupted the action. Having already been booked, Marie Höbinger was arguably fortunate to be on the field when she bumped with Mead.
Just before halftime, Sophie Román Haug easily intercepted a clearing pass from Van Domselaar, giving the visitors the greatest chance. The only chance on aim before the whistle, however, came from the Norway forward, who sent her attempt directly back at the goalkeeper.
Slegers substituted Frida Maanum for a hurt Mead at halftime in an attempt to energize her side. She appeared to have had an effect for a short while, giving Arsenal a creative outlet and requiring a few saves from Rachael Laws. But the home team wasn't playing at their best, and Liverpool quickly regained the initiative.
They seized the chance when it presented itself as the clock was running out and more time was approaching. Román Haug received the ball, and he had excellent box control. Her impulsive half-volley appeared to have struck the post with agony, but a fortunate break caused the bounced ball to strike Van Domselaar's back before entering the net. Despite having her head in her hands, the Dutch keeper was powerless to do anything.
Slegers's dice roll resulted in a number of last-minute adjustments, such as moving defender Amanda Ilestedt up front, although they had little impact. After a challenging few weeks, the tourists were ecstatic. They have a chance to advance to their first FA Cup final since 1996 in April when they play Chelsea in a semi-final.
