Mikel Arteta has revealed that he expects a "big summer" as Arsenal seeks to bolster its transfer strategy.
The Gunners are on track for their third consecutive second-place finish in the Premier League. They have come close to winning their first league title in almost two decades, but summer transfer market signings will be critical if Arsenal are to improve on their runners-up record next season.
This summer will be Arteta's sixth as manager of the club. The Spaniard reflected: "The way we planned the first five summers, they were all going to be quite large, with various goals.
"Because of the turnaround of players and the objective of those windows, they were going to be different."
Regarding the forthcoming window, he stated: "First and foremost, we need to strengthen the depth of the team, but we also want to increase particular qualities and skills that we require to move forward.
"It's going to be a big one, and we're extremely excited.
"I also mentioned that the last five were big. So each summer is significant because it represents a chance.
"It's a big summer for many things because first of all you have to maintain all the good foundations that we have and then obviously how can we improve and evolve the team."

Aside from the transfer market, Arsenal's squad has grown thanks to young players rising through the ranks from the academy. Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have been two of the Gunners' bright spots this season.
Arteta elaborated: "It is not only about investing because there are certain positions that probably we didn't expect to have someone like Ethan or Myles contributing to that, which has been great and if we have more of those then beautiful."
Arsenal will have a new sporting director in charge of this summer's transfer window. Andrea Berta joins the club in that position following eight years with Atletico Madrid.

When asked about the new director, Arteta gave a positive review: "What I am extremely confident about is how he will make everyone better. That is my confidence.
"Because of who he is, his demeanor, how he speaks, and how enthusiastic he is about what he does. And that's exactly what we need.
"You know, new blood with people who are so driven and so dedicated to the football club and what we already do, I want to add value. That is something I am extremely confident about."

Finally, when asked about potential contract extensions for star players Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, the Spanish manager responded amusingly: "Now I'm going to leave all those questions for Andrea and make sure that he has his place and role and can fulfil it, and hopefully my influence will be in other aspects."
