Ajax are in early talks with Burnley's Wout Weghorst about a possible summer transfer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the forward is in talks with the Dutch giants regarding a potential move during the transfer season.

Weghorst is still under contract with Burnley until 2025, but he has not played for the club in either of the last two seasons.

Instead, he has spent time on loan at Bestikas, Manchester United, and Hoffenheim.

The striker is now in Germany, competing for the Netherlands at Euro 2024, where he scored the game-winning goal for Ronald Koeman's side against Poland in their first group game.

Weghorst is reportedly in negotiations with Ajax about returning to his home country this summer.

There is hope that an agreement can be reached on personal grounds, but negotiations with the Clarets must also take place about a transfer fee.

It remains to be seen what kind of player the Lancashire club is looking for, but they should be open to a deal given his lack of playing time at Turf Moor.

Weghorst is also said to be looking for a deal that will allow him to leave Burnley this summer, with FC Twente apparently intrigued.

The Championship club is now without a manager following Vincent Kompany's departure to Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

The Belgian's replacement may have a say in Weghorst's future, but no contender has emerged as the clear front-runner.

The 31-year-old's future may also be decided after his participation in the European Championship, which will not end until at least June 25 but could extend into July.

Koeman's team won their first game 2-1 thanks to an 83rd-minute goal from Weghorst, who came off the bench to secure a crucial three points.

That victory gives the team a good opportunity of making it to the knockout rounds, ahead of games against France and Austria.

Burnley's Summer Plans.

The Clarets are expected to lose several players this summer as a result of their relegation to the Championship.

Kompany oversaw a 19th-place finish in the Premier League, earning him a shot at the Bayern Munich post.

Weghorst might be one of those rare departures, as the striker did not figure in Kompany's plans during his tenure as manager.

Another possible departure is goalkeeper James Trafford, who has been linked with a move to Premier League club Newcastle United in recent weeks.

Weghorst's move to Ajax benefits all parties.

If Burnley wants to create revenue from sales, Weghorst should be the first to go.

The striker, currently 31, has made few appearances for the club since signing in January 2022.

While his loan movements have demonstrated that he might be a valuable member of the squad, it is easier to cash in and move on, especially since his contract is slated to end next year anyhow.

Weghorst might be worth £7 to £10 million, which Burnley can spend in their first-team squad ahead of the new manager's arrival.
