Five major takeaways from the 2024/25 WSL season thus far.

Women's Super League action has been paused this weekend as players prepare for the first international break of the 2024/25 season.

With some of our favourite players embarking on a series of friendlies throughout the world, we've had the chance to reflect on how the season has progressed thus far.

Manchester City now leads the table, with no club able to break their winning streak, followed by Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, it's worth noting that the Citizens enjoy a distinct advantage. They've had the luxury of playing one extra game than Chelsea and United, who had their match postponed due to a scheduling problem with the UEFA Women's Champions League and have yet to be rescheduled.

However, one thing is clear: this season has seen a significant boost in overall standard. In the first few weeks, certain clubs took advantage of this, while others struggled to keep up.

Seagulls gleam under Dario Vidosic.

Dario Vidosic secured his move to England's south coast this summer, becoming Brighton & Hove Albion's new manager following a turbulent couple of years. Bringing his preferred possession-based approach from Melbourne City to the WSL was always going to be a struggle.

Vidosic was destined to be a small fish in a huge pond, having only joined the profession in 2022 when he retired. However, following a disappointing ninth-place finish in the WSL and a midseason managerial change last season, it is safe to assume that Vidosic has unwrapped a new-look Seagulls team.

Brighton came into the transfer window with a clear plan, adding proven veterans such as Fran Kirby and Nikita Parris. However, the Seagulls also signed Barcelona prodigy Bruna Vilamala and Arsenal academy standout Michelle Agyemang on loan.

The Seagulls have subsequently raced out of the gates, finishing the first league block in fourth place. Vidosic's squad thrashed Everton 4-0 on the first day, then defeated Aston Villa 4-2 in a thriller. A narrow 1-0 setback to Manchester City, as well as a well-managed 1-1 draw with Manchester United, are further promising indicators of what fans might expect.

Vidosic isn't backing down from the task, as his Seagulls put his possession-based style to the test against the league's toughest opponents. It's a good moment to be a Brighton supporter under Vidosic's new managerial style.

Lacklustre Arsenal struggles to regain their footing.

Arsenal showed largely positive signs after a 2-2 draw with Manchester City on the opening day, with a late equalizer at the Emirates Stadium preventing defeat. However, the subsequent trend was quite the contrary.

Arsenal earned a point from a 0-0 draw with Everton before losing 5-2 to Bayern Munich in the Women's Champions League. Woes only got worse from there, as Chelsea raced away with London bragging rights in their first ever win at Emirates Stadium.

If the Gunners weren't already unsure, Jonas Eidevall's abrupt resignation just before Arsenal's match against Valerenga didn't help matters. Interim head coach Renee Slegers led the squad to successive victories, defeating Valerenga 4-1 and West Ham 2-0, respectively.

Arsenal must now close the four-point gap between themselves and Chelsea in the league table, with Chelsea still having an extra game in hand. If it looks bad on paper, it will undoubtedly look worse on the field.

Alessia Russo has not scored a WSL goal this season. Stina Blackstenius hasn't scored for the Gunners since Arsenal's 2-1 win against Manchester City on May 5, despite the fact that her influence off the bench was critical in defeating West Ham.

Leah Williamson and Lotte Wubben-Moy have been in and out of the starting XI due to persistent injuries, while Kim Little appears to be lacking her customary clinical edge.

Despite strengthening through summer acquisitions, Arsenal have been a shadow of their full potential in the WSL thus far.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd guides the Chelsea ship.

Following the departure of Chelsea great Emma Hayes, fans faced uncertain times. Sonia Bompastor, a former Lyon head coach, assumed managerial duties. It has been a high-flying affair ever since, with the Blues winning all six competitive games under Bompastor's leadership. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, on the other hand, serves as the Chelsea's guiding light.

Rytting Kaneryd is unquestionably the most in-form player in the WSL right now, with three goals and two assists in only four league games. The most memorable, perhaps, was a magnificent volley in Chelsea's 5-2 victory against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

When she isn't terrorizing opposing defenses with the ball at her feet, Rytting Kaneryd is providing her teammates with gold-plated service inside the box. As Chelsea seek to extend their WSL dominance, Rytting Kaneryd will be critical to the English champions' success.

History-making Spurs fail to keep momentum.

Tottenham Hotspur scaled new heights in the 2023/24 season, scoring their highest ever WSL points tally (31). Spurs also won their first north London derby, thanks to a magnificent end-to-end performance that ended with Martha Thomas burying the winner in a 1-0 victory over Arsenal.

The most historic occasion occurred when Robert Vilahamn reached the club's first FA Cup Final under the arch of Wembley Stadium. Despite Manchester United's 4-0 victory that day, Spurs fans had plenty to be happy about going into the 2024/25 season.

The loss of Grace Clinton, who was on loan, and Celin Bizet was always going to be difficult for Tottenham to recover from, and the two have prospered in Manchester.

The flaws in Robert Vilahamn's offensive style of game have been exposed, and Chelsea took advantage of them in a 5-2 thumping before the international break. Tottenham frequently appear one-dimensional, with the team focusing solely on either defense or offense, and rarely both.

Despite opening the new season with a 4-0 victory over WSL newcomers Crystal Palace, Tottenham are still looking for their second win after five games.

Challenges will inevitably occur in a manager's second season. Vilahamn's playing style will require time and investment to fully shine. However, for the time being, fans are stuck in the middle, which is a frustrating situation.

Man Utd turns the page.

Manchester United have a lot of work to do coming into the new season after failing to replicate their historic season in 2022/23.

Grace Clinton was warmly welcomed back to Carrington after a successful loan spell, and quality acquisitions such as Dominique Janssen, Elisabeth Terland, and Celin Bizet added to United fans' excitement.

On the first day of the WSL, the Red Devils thrashed West Ham United 3-0 at Old Trafford, setting the tone for the season to come.

Marc Skinner's side maintained their unbeaten streak with a 1-0 win at Everton before scoring three goals to upset Spurs at Leigh Sports Village. United were projected to win at the AMEX Stadium, and Clinton's first-half goal placed them ahead at halftime. Brighton came out strong after the break, ending in a 1–1 draw on the south coast.

United have began to tick under the guidance of new captain Maya Le Tissier, while Dominique Janssen's flawless transition into a screening midfielder has helped to bolster the defensive lines. Terland started her scoring account with a superb brace against Tottenham, and the striker is clearly prepared to meet the expectations placed on her.

All signs point to the resurgence of the United machine that we seen two seasons ago. If the Red Devils keep up their recent form, the WSL will have a battle for Champions League spots - and possibly more - beyond the typical suspects.

While it is important to praise United's performance, we must also examine the results closely.

Two of the victories have come against the lowest two teams in the WSL league table, as well as a doubtful Spurs team that has yet to establish itself as a legitimate threat. Furthermore, Dario Vidosic's half-time changes last Saturday placed United on the back foot and left them unable to reply.

Scraping results is still an important talent in the WSL. Arsenal have already demonstrated this by surrendering points against Everton at the Emirates Stadium. Following the international break, all eyes will be on Manchester United as they battle to reclaim their place in the title race.

Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove collapsed during a Serie A match.

Edoardo Bove, a Fiorentina midfielder, slumped on the pitch during his team's Serie A match against Inter Milan on Sunday. Bove's teammates hastily shouted for medical assistance and surrounded the 22-year-old before doctors treated him and quickly transferred him to a nearby ambulance on the side of the pitch. According to Sky Sport Italia, Bove was rushed to the Careggi Hospital near Fiorentina's Stadio Artemio Franchi. The Italian broadcaster later stated that Bove was breathing and beating on his own. Barcelona dealt enormous injury blow ahead of Inter and Real Madrid clashes.

In a heartbreaking evening, Barcelona came back from two goals down against Inter in the Champions League semi-final first leg. The Blaugrana will believe they should have won the game after losing twice from set pieces. Now they're calculating the expense. After only 42 minutes, French defender Jules Kounde collapsed on the pitch, clutching the back of his calf. He had to be replaced by Eric Garcia, who performed admirably as a right-back out of position. Kounde's injury has raised concerns ahead of a number of critical games. Kounde will be tested on Thursday, but it appears that he has a muscle problem, most likely more serious than a grade tear. According to Sport, Kounde will miss their La Liga match against Real Valladolid, their Champions League return leg in Milan against Inter, and their decisive Clasico against Real Madrid the following weekend. Kounde was seen limping as he exited the stadium, telling the cameras, 'We'll see tomorrow'.
