Donyell Malen's spectacular move from a corner gave the Bundesliga powerhouses the lead shortly after the halfway mark of the first half, and they rightfully seized the lead.
Maximilian Beier scored a second goal after running onto a through pass from Julian Brandt, opening the floodgates at the Volkswagen Arena.
After two minutes, the roles were switched, with Beier setting up Brandt to appear to end the game in less than 30 minutes.
After the half, however, Wolfsburg was a different team and grabbed one back shortly before the hour, and four minutes later, Pascal Gross was sent off, leaving Dortmund clutching on in fear.
However, they were unable to produce a second goal to turn it into a real match despite intense Wolfsburg pressure, and the Black and Yellow's strong defense allowed them to secure a vital three points.
