Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign FC Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong. Since Erik ten Hag took over as manager of the club in 2022, no summer has passed without the Dutch midfielder being associated with The Theatre of Dreams.
United sorely need to strengthen their midfield options again, as Scott McTominay's future is unknown, and Fulham are set to make an improved second bid for him. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are two more players whose future at the club is far from certain after this summer. As a result, Ten Hag's staff has been in talks with Paris Saint-Germain about Manuel Ugarte, and they are also reportedly interested in Martin Zubimendi and Youssouf Fofana.
Adrien Rabiot is another long-term objective, but according to a recent rumor from Spain cited by football365, "Man Utd have'resumed talks' to finally get a deal over the line for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong." It has been suggested that "Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag and Barcelona president Joan Laporta have 'closed the deal' for the Netherlands" international, but this could be an incorrect translation because the original text should be translated as "are closing a deal" rather than "have closed" one.
The report does not specify how much has been agreed upon, but it does state that it is more than £67 million and that there is a "complete understanding between the two parties involved." As has always been the case, despite sporting director Deco's "complete willingness to allow him to leave," the Dutchman remains apprehensive about a move to the Premier League. United famously agreed to sign De Jong in 2022 and then spent the entire summer hoping to persuade him to relocate to England. They couldn't.
The Old Trafford club is interested in bringing in former Ajax stars Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt this summer, joining existing players Andre Onana, Lisandro Martinez, and Antony. Nonetheless, with United needing to sell in order to purchase and Manuel Ugarte being the clear objective, the reports may be a touch fanciful and wishful thinking on the part of the Spanish side, since getting rid of De Jong's exorbitant salaries would do wonders for their financial woes.
