Ivan Juric, manager of Southampton, feels Liverpool should have been given a penalty in the second half of their 3-1 loss at Anfield on Saturday. Will Smallbone gave the Saints an unexpected lead in stoppage time of the first half, but Darin Nunez quickly erased the lead. Mo Salah scored two penalty penalties in the second half to give Liverpool the victory, but Juric thought the first one was unfair. There didn't appear to be much in the area as Smallbone and Nunez collided, but referee Lewis Smith gave the penalty. Juric, the Southampton manager, is furious at Liverpool's penalty call. "They responded quite well," Juric said to BBC Sport. "We had some excellent first-half situations. The match was altered, in my opinion, by the [first] penalty, which was not a penalty. Arsenal have agreed to transfer goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton for £25 million, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Last season, the England international was a backup goalkeeper to David Raya. He made only 11 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal. It appeared that he would not accept another season as a deputy, and the Saints have now won the fight to sign him permanently from Arsenal.
With the 25-year-old on his way to the south coast, Arsenal are ready to intensify their pursuit of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
Arsenal plans to replace Ramsdale with Garcia.
Ramsdale has been an effective shot-stopper for the Gunners. He now has a chance to earn guaranteed minutes and help Southampton avoid relegation.
Arsenal is expected to find a replacement before Friday's transfer deadline, given they currently have no other senior shot-stoppers in the squad besides Raya.
The team has verbally agreed on personal terms with Garcia, but a transfer may not be easy. The Gunners will need to negotiate a fee with Espanyol.
The 23-year-old's release clause was raised from £21 million to £25 million in mid-August, but the Gunners will hope to recruit him for approximately £10-15 million.
Garcia has great reflexes. He maintained eight clean sheets in Espanyol's final 14 games last season, as they were promoted to La Liga.
He has also impressed with his back-end distribution. This season, he's completed 70% of his passes and averaged nearly five successful long balls.
Garcia has a lot of promise and might become a starter in the future.
