When the lights burn brightest in European football, few fixtures capture imagination quite like a semifinal second leg between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. This is not simply a contest of talent; it is a clash of footballing ideologies, of rhythm versus resistance, of structured aggression against calculated containment. The stakes amplify every decision, every pass, every tactical adjustment. With a place in the final on the line, the second leg becomes less about reputation and more about execution under pressure. Interim England manager Lee Carsley says Ben White's standing with the national squad remains unchanged.
The Arsenal defender is once again absent from the Three Lions squad, Carsley's first since taking over for Gareth Southgate on an interim basis.White requested not to be selected for Southgate's team in March, and he has not been with the group since leaving the 2022 World Cup camp in Qatar early due to a disagreement with Southgate's assistant Steve Holland.
And Carsley, who will lead England against the Republic of Ireland and Finland next month, claims White was once again unavailable.
"As far as I'm aware, he wasn't available for selection," Carsley told me.
"Nothing has changed in my two weeks here, so that's where we are with it.
"I saw in certain press reports suggesting he was open to it, but it hasn't gone any further. As far as I am aware, there has been no change.
"He's always played well but he made himself unavailable for selection so I'm not sure where we go with that."
Carsley has, however, sprung a few surprises with his pick, identifying several unfamiliar faces.
