In the opening round of the Coppa Italia, Napoli narrowly defeated Modena on penalties, marking a nerve-wracking start to the Antonio Conte era.
Napoli was obliged to play in the first round of the Coppa Italia after finishing in tenth place in Serie A the previous season. It was a poor performance at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, even though going into the game against Modena, they had won four of their previous five preseason games.Victor Osimhen was not in the squad and was set to leave before the game, thus Conte was not able to rely on him.
Despite this, the team was playing at full strength, with players like Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Matteo Politano, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia leading the charge against the Serie B team.
Napoli went on to dominate the game with 28 shots and 75% ball control as a result of their starting lineup. However, only six of their shots found the target due to a lack of rhythm, fluidity, or intensity.
Meanwhile, Modena maintained her composure and showed that she was up to the task of pulling off a huge upset. There were moments when nine players were back defending, and penalties were used to conclude the game.
That's where Conte's guys won out in the end. Prior to Modena's final spot kick attempt being saved by Alex Meret, both teams missed one of their penalties.
