The Rise of the 4-2-3-1 Formation: Why It's the Ultimate Tactical Choice in Modern Football.

In the ever-evolving theater of modern football, where every square meter of grass is contested with surgical precision and every pass carries the weight of tactical intention, one formation has emerged as the undisputed king of contemporary strategy: the 4-2-3-1. This tactical architecture has transcended its origins to become the preferred choice for champions across Europe's elite leagues, national teams that hoist World Cup trophies, and coaches who redefine what's possible on the pitch. What makes the 4-2-3-1 so special isn't merely its numerical balance or its symmetrical beauty when drawn on a tactics board—it's the profound philosophical shift it represents, a marriage of defensive stability and attacking fluidity that speaks directly to the soul of modern football's demands. The story of the 4-2-3-1 begins not in the glittering arenas of the Champions League or the hallowed grounds of the World Cup, but in the Segunda Division of Spain during the 1991-92 se...

From Chloe Kelly to Naomi Girma, here are ten players that could move in January.

As the winter transfer market opens, we take a look at ten prominent players who may change teams next month.

Naomi Girma

Age 24 Nationality US Club San Diego Wave

Girma, widely regarded as one of the top centre-backs in the world and recently named to the FIFA top XI, is nearing the final year of her contract, and speculation has grown that she may leave San Diego. Only the world's wealthiest clubs are expected to be able to afford her this window, and she has been connected with French giants Lyon, although Chelsea are also looking for a central defender after Kadeisha Buchanan suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament damage.

Chloe Kelly

Age 26 Nationality English Club Manchester City

Having started only one Women’s Super League game this season, a move away from Manchester City may be the solution for Kelly to secure more match minutes in her quest for a seat on the plane to Euro 2025 with the Lionesses next summer. The winger, whose winning goal clinched England victory in Euro 2022’s final, is evidently not part of Gareth Taylor’s first-choice side at present and she has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain. With Kelly’s contract expiring in 2025, a loan move in January to another WSL team could be on the cards, although amid Manchester City’s ongoing injury concerns, they may not allow a senior player to leave.

Marta

Age 38 Nationality Brazilian Club Out of contract.

Marta, a six-time winner of Fifa's world player of the year award, is now a free agent after being rewarded for her patience after eight seasons with the Orlando Pride when she and her teammates won the NWSL title in November. Her future is now the biggest question mark surrounding Orlando Pride’s off-season break. She has said she wants to continue her playing career for two more years. Orlando Pride said in November that they are in discussions with the three-time Olympic medallist about a new deal but she has been linked with a move to the Brazilian club Corinthians, who are understood to be very interested.

Keira Walsh

Age 27 Nationality English Club Barcelona

The England midfielder, who was the subject of the world's most expensive transfer when she joined Barcelona in 2022, is about to reach the final six months of her deal. As a result, she could legally sign a pre-contract agreement with another club on January 1 and leave the European champions for free the following summer. If Barcelona decides to cash in with a January sale, Arsenal and Chelsea will most likely be first in line for Walsh's signing. It is unclear whether Barcelona will be motivated to keep her for the rest of the season to help them defend their Champions League crown.

Kathrin Kühl

Age 21 Nationality Danish Club Arsenal

After a loan spell with Everton in the second half of last season, the talented Danish midfielder could return to the Merseyside club in January, after the Friedkin Group's long-awaited takeover. Kühl has many admirers in the game, but she appears to be a surplus to Arsenal's first squad when Mariona Caldentey was added to their midfield options last summer. This season, the Dane has made only one WSL appearance as a late substitution.

Hayley Ladd

Age 31 Nationality Manchester United, a Welsh club,

As Wales prepares for the European Championship, Ladd will undoubtedly want consistent game time to prosper in Switzerland. Match minutes have been scarce at Manchester United this season, as she has yet to start a WSL game and has only eight minutes off the bench in three league outings. Crystal Palace could be interested in signing this experienced operator, who was a regular member of Manchester United's second-place finish in 2022-23, although she is nearing the end of her contract.

Klara Bühl

Age 24 Nationality German club Bayern Munich

Barcelona are understood to be interested in signing the Germany winger from Bayern as was first reported by the Spanish newspaper Sport in November. The 24-year-old has six months remaining on her contract and has admirers all across Europe. Bühl scored against England at Wembley in October as Germany recorded an entertaining 4-3 victory and found the net against Juventus in the Champions League in December as she helped Bayern qualify for the knockout stages. Domestically, she has scored four times in 10 Frauen Bundesliga starts this term.

Marie-Antoinette Katoto

Age 26 Nationality French Club Paris Saint-Germain

Katoto, another international player, is entering the final six months of her contract, and there will be fewer sought-after centre-forwards in world football until her future is settled. It is known that a January move is improbable, but clubs from around the world have expressed interest in signing Katoto on a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer in the summer, while PSG will undoubtedly want to fight to maintain their top scorer.

Kerolin

Age 25 Nationality Brazilian Club Out of contract.

The North Carolina Courage are in contract negotiations with the Brazil attacker, who earned the NWSL's most valuable player award in 2023 but is now a free agent after her three-year contract expired before the 2022 season. The 25-year-old recovered after a devastating injury in September and marked her comeback with a quick goal, her first of 2024. Before her injury, she was linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2023. She has previously played for Madrid CFF in Spain and for other teams in her home country of Brazil.

Jule Brand

Age 22 Nationality German Club Wolfsburg

Brand, who is in the final six months of her current contract, is thought to be a target for Lyon as well as a number of Champions League competitors. Brand allegedly turned off a move to Barcelona earlier in 2024 and has scored twice in three Champions League appearances this season. She has played with the German club Wolfsburg since 2022 and was a member of the Germany squad that advanced to the final of Euro 2022 and placed third in the 2024 Olympics.

Arsenal's January 2026 Transfer Plans: Managing Injury Issues And Squad Depth.

Arsenal enter the January 2026 window in a position of strength in the Premier League table, but a mix of nagging injuries and potential high‑profile exits means this will quietly be one of the most decisive months of Mikel Arteta’s project. Rather than a chaotic overhaul, Arsenal’s plan is to make one or two targeted moves, protect squad balance, and ensure the second half of the season is not derailed by a thin bench in key positions. The Context: Title Push Meets Fitness Risk Arsenal arrive in January 2026 as genuine title contenders again, backed by a deeper squad than in previous seasons but simultaneously tested by an unusually dense injury list. The club’s summer recruitment left them with stronger options in almost every line, yet the physical toll of competing on multiple fronts has brought Arteta back to the same old question: do they have enough fit, top‑level players to survive a long run‑in without another collapse. Two realities define Arsenal’s thinking this winter: The ...
