On Saturday night at Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid defeated Villarreal 2-0 thanks to goals from Federico Valverde and Vinicius Jr.
For the most part of the match, Los Blancos were in control of the outcome and looked poised to cap off the evening with three points that highlighted their performance. But just in the conclusion, the game took a bad turn.
Dani Carvajal, who was playing in extra time, collided unluckily with Yeremy Pino of Villarreal and had to extend his knee forcefully to win the ball from the Spaniard.
Unfortunately, during the play, the Euro-winning defender overextended his knee and instantly collapsed in agonizing pain.
On the field, the player could be seen writhing in excruciating pain and displaying anguish.
He attempted to stand again but was unable to support much weight on his leg. He fell back to the ground right away and was finally carried away on a stretcher.
Carvajal was later seen sobbing on the ground.
a worry for Real MadridCarvajal's injury seemed severe in every way, and since knee injuries usually require many months of recovery, he might miss a few months of action.
This season, Carlo Ancelotti and company have already been missing a number of important players. They will be hoping that the right-back makes a full recovery and can get back into the game quickly.
Practically speaking, though, the main worry is if the player has injured his patellar tendon or cruciate ligament, both of which call for surgery.
Tomorrow's tests will validate the prognosis.
Naturally, if Carvajal has actually sustained a serious injury, then Lucas Vazquez will now be under more scrutiny and will need to play a bigger part in Ancelotti's plans.
