After defeating the Washington Spirit, who were in second place, 2-0 on Sunday, Orlando Pride won their first National Women's Soccer League Shield.
After joining in 2017, Marta, a star veteran and legend from Brazil, led the celebrations following the full-time whistle and eventually lifted the trophy while dressed in purple.Holding the all-time goals and appearance record, it was fitting that her penalty went down as the winning goal for the club’s first piece of silverware.
Tara McKeown’s own goal secured the hosts’ victory in front of 7,729 fans.
With three games remaining, Orlando, meanwhile, may continue to create more history this season. Currently, on 57 points, the club stays undefeated and clinched their first playoff spot since 2017.
There are still matches against the Portland Thorns, Gotham FC, and Seattle Reign.
