Bayer Leverkusen, German double winners, defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in the DFB-Pokal at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night, with Manuel Neuer sent off for the hosts in the first half.
With Harry Kane out injured, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany chose a 4-2-4 formation from the start, with Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise working in the center.Xabi Alonso, Kompany's Leverkusen rival, similarly elected to play without a typical striker from the outset, instead using Florian Wirtz as a false nine.
In the 11th minute, Wirtz had the game's first serious chance, dragging a shot wide of the goal from just outside the box.
Manuel Neuer then made life difficult for the home side in the 17th minute by receiving a straight red card. The Bayern captain was sent off after running beyond the box and clumsily pulling down Jeremie Frimpong, who was pursuing a long ball.
With Sven Ulreich unavailable for personal reasons, Bayern's third-choice goalkeeper, Daniel Peretz, replaced Neuer and made a fantastic stop to deny Frimpong in the 33rd minute.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Bayern generated a few chances on the other end in the first half. Kingsley Coman had a great chance in the 38th minute, but his miscued shot hit three Leverkusen defenders before being cleared for a corner.
Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso replaced Robert Andrich with in-form attacker Patrik Schick at half-time, but his team failed to create chances early in the second half.
Things didn't get any better for Bayer 04 when Patrik Schick went down injured in the 61st minute and was replaced by Nathan Tella.
But then, almost out of nowhere, Tella broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, heading home Alejandro Grimaldo's cross to put the visitors ahead and send the away fans into a frenzy.
Kompany made a lot of attacking substitutions as the second half progressed. Playing 11 against 10, Leverkusen hung on until the final whistle to advance to the quarterfinals and eliminate Bayern from the competition.
