Niclas Fullkrug is poised to miss a prolonged period of time due to an injury, dealing a major blow to incoming West Ham manager Graham Potter.

The 31-year-old pulled up with a hamstring injury against Aston Villa on Friday and promptly signaled for the bench before collapsing on the pitch.

Crysencio Summerville also had an injury in the FA Cup third-round match, but West Ham are hoping the winger's fitness issues are less serious.

Fullkrug was assisted off the field by medical personnel as West Ham lost 2-1 at Villa Park in Potter's first game in command.

Potter acknowledged after the game that Fullkrug's injury appeared serious, and West Ham have now announced the striker will be sidelined for "a number of weeks".

According to early reports on Sunday, Fullkrug could be sidelined for up to three months.

It's a major loss for both the team and the player, as Fullkrug has already lost three months of his rookie season with an Achilles injury.

The Germany international has made just three Premier League starts since joining from Borussia Dortmund for £27 million.
