As Newcastle United defeated Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final to end their 70-year domestic trophy drought, Eddie Howe's thoughts shifted to his late mother and his sons.
Despite Federico Chiesa's late goal, goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak at Wembley sealed a 2-1 victory, making head coach Howe the first English manager to win one of the country's major men's football awards since Harry Redknapp in 2008.
"Naturally you end up thinking of the players, the staff, but also the people who aren't with you – like for me, my mum, and family members," the 47-year-old stated when asked about his feelings as he celebrated with his players on the field following the final whistle.
After Newcastle defeated Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, Eddie Howe's attention shifted to his family.
When you visit them, you simply reflect on all the hardships and sacrifices they made for you as a child in order to provide you with the chance to have a decent life.
"You believe that you are receiving support and assistance from above. My goal has always been to try to make my family proud, and now that I have three boys, of course, I also want to try to make them proud.
When he arrived for his post-match press conference, Howe apologized for the stench after his players, led by midfielder Joelinton, showered him with joyful champagne.
It also shown that we are capable of competing with the best. We now have the challenge of trying to get there more frequently, such as by improving our performance like we did today.
Perhaps fittingly, Burn, a local boy, opened the proceedings with a spectacular long-range header, the Magpies' first at Wembley since Rob Lee scored in an FA Cup semi-final 25 years ago, just days after receiving their first senior England call-up. The afternoon was filled with intense emotion for the 32,000 black and white fans crammed into Wembley.
"We've been working on those corners nonstop for the past two weeks," Howe stated. I can admit that our training has been uneventful, but he has also delivered one from a distance.
"I thought it was a fantastic header, and it was very appropriate that he was the one who scored it." Even a goal at Wembley has been long overdue; it was a spectacular occasion.

"[It's] a great moment and that's what it's all about," he stated. It's about accepting the achievement.
"Just try to enjoy the moment and take it all in; football is full of tough days, and this club has had its share over the years."
Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United raise the Carabao Cup trophy.
A wait that would have ended in the Carabao Cup final two years ago, but Manchester United spoiled the celebration, is a major step in Newcastle's comeback under its Saudi-backed owners. The club's most recent trophy, the Inter Cities Fairs Cup, was won in 1969.
"It's really important," Howe stated. Though there is no assurance, I believe it shows that we are capable of becoming greater.
"We had to attempt to take advantage of our opportunity today because you don't get many shots at this or a cup final, but I've never doubted our capacity to improve. That's where the players performed so brilliantly and under pressure.
