Manchester United Move for Espanyol Goalkeeper as Rebuild Plans Accelerate.

Manchester United are looking at Joan Garcia as part of their summer rebuild.

Christopher Vivell, Manchester United's head of recruiting, is working quickly to reshape a squad in desperate need of new energy and talent. According to Team Talk, Vivell has begun talks to recruit Espanyol's excellent goalkeeper Joan Garcia, signalling a summer of big upheaval at Old Trafford.

Rebuilding Old Trafford's Foundations.

United's new manager, Rúben Amorim, is rebuilding the team after a disastrous season. According to Team Talk, Amorim is entrusted with assembling a group of players who can not only fit into his 3-4-2-1 style but also help United reclaim its place among the Premier League elite.

"And while salvation can still arrive in the Europa League, those at Old Trafford are painfully aware of just how far behind United have slipped off the pace on the domestic front."

With that depressing fact in mind, Garcia's recruitment could be a key first step. After one too many high-profile gaffes this season, "it appears the writing is on the wall for Andre Onana." Despite Onana's assurance that he intends to fulfill his contract, competition for the gloves will now heat up.

"However, with Altay Bayindir expected to leave, United now plan to bring in far stronger competition that could ultimately crush Onana's chances of retaining the gloves on a regular basis."

Joan Garcia, Europe's Rising Goalkeeper Star

Cope, a Spanish news outlet, said that Vivell had contacted Garcia's agents in order to begin negotiations. Given Garcia's great reputation in Europe, the move makes sense. Standing at 6ft 3in, the Espanyol goalie is one of the top five ranked goalkeepers in Europe's top leagues for players with 20 or more appearances, according to WhoScored.

"The phenomenal 6ft 3in stopper is considered one of the best young goalkeepers around and actually ranks in the top five rated goalkeepers in Europe's top-five leagues this season to have made 20 appearances or more, according to WhoScored."

United's desperation is reasonable. Garcia's release clause is currently €25 million (£21.3 million), but it will increase to €30 million (£25.6 million) in the remaining 15 days of the transfer window, and it might rise even further if he makes his senior Spain debut.

"Furthermore, United are keen to trigger his signing early this summer, having learned that the player has €25m (£21.3m, $28.4m) release clause, which will rise to €30m (£25.6m, $34.1m) for the last 15 days of the window, and it will increase by an additional €5m (£4.2m, $5.6m) were he to make his full international debut for Spain."\

Espanyol sporting director Fran Garagarza has acknowledged that the club is willing to sell if the proper offer is made, while also emphasizing the player's composure in the midst of transfer speculation.

"There is a lot of commotion, but nothing is occurring. There is no firm movement as there was during the previous [summer] timeframe. There may be movements because he is a top-level goalie, but we are calm, and the kid is especially calm."

There are high expectations for Garcia.

Former Barcelona goalkeeper Oier Olazabal's comparisons of Garcia to legendary Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas highlight the degree of expectation around the 23-year-old.

Garcia's ascension has been swift. Garcia, who replaced the injured Fernando Pacheco in March 2024, had eight clean sheets and conceded only seven goals in 14 Segunda Division matches. His heroics continued in the play-offs, as he kept three more clean sheets and helped Espanyol win promotion back to La Liga.

An Olympic gold medal with Spain capped a breakout year, despite the fact that Garcia was an unused substitute during the competition.

Fran Garagarza's respect for Garcia goes beyond the pitch:

"We are dealing with not only a fantastic goalie, but also a great person. His behavior, poise, harmony, and tone of voice make him one of my top ten favorites. That is what I will take from him.

United expands its summer plans.

Vivell's ambitions do not stop with Garcia. According to Team Talk, United are pursuing three early deals, including a move for Matheus Cunha and a Serie A midfielder.

They are monitoring Cole Palmer's status at Chelsea, and Rasmus Højlund could be involved in a surprise swap move.

This summer appears to have the potential to change Manchester United's very identity under Amorim. The targeting of Garcia demonstrates the seriousness of the strategy — reinforcing from the back with a dependable, dominating goalkeeper who can meet the demands of modern game.

Garcia's ability to play out of the back and reputation for commanding his box reflect the type of player recruitment that elite European teams have prioritized in recent years.

Our View - EPL Index Analysis

Manchester United fans are understandably excited after learning about Joan Garcia's prospective arrival. While fans have seen many big promises in the past, the pursuit of a highly regarded young goalkeeper like Garcia implies a level of long-term thinking that has been severely lacking at Old Trafford.

Given Garcia's enormous potential, the price tag seems reasonable. At only 23 years old, with similarities to Iker Casillas and a promising international career on the horizon, United would be investing in their future rather than another quick fix.

Supporters will be hoping that Garcia's signing marks the beginning of a unified, organized rebuild under Amorim. There is still some skepticism, of course, since fans have grown sick of chaotic transfer windows and mixed recruitment plans.

Nonetheless, if Vivell can secure Garcia and back it up with similarly astute additions across the team's spine, there is actual cause to believe that Manchester United can finally emerge from the ashes of recent seasons.

The foundation must be carefully laid. Joan Garcia may be a cornerstone, not just a brick.
