Following Manchester United's "embarrassed" head coach's outbursts over a lack of urgency and big club mentality, Ruben Amorim expressed uncertainty about his future if his "brave" summer transfers fail.
Three days after making it to the Europa League final, the Red Devils had a rough return to reality as West Ham, another struggling team, won the Premier League for the first time at Old Trafford since 2007.
With goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen in a 2-0 victory, United has now dropped an incredible 17 Premier League games this season, nine of which were at home.
Amorim, who claims there is a "lack of urgency in everything we do" and a concerning mindset at a club that is 16th in the rankings, was enraged by their most recent lackluster performance.
According to the United manager, "the biggest concern for me is that feeling that 'it's OK' and 'we cannot change our position so much so it's OK'."
"That is the biggest issue facing our club right now because we are losing the sense that we are a huge team and that losing a game at home is disastrous. That, in my opinion, is our club's main worry.
Without a league title since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, Amorim described it as "the most dangerous feeling that you have in a big club."
The United head coach responded, "How a manager of Manchester United is supposed to feel in that position – embarrassed and it's hard to accept," when asked how it feels to have his team in 16th place with two games remaining.
"I believe that everyone needs to give a lot of things careful thought. The final is on everyone's mind. In our club, the final is not a problem right now.
"We need to make a lot of changes by the end of the season, and we have bigger things to consider."
Amorim, who has only managed six league victories since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November, reaffirmed that United "need to change a lot of things during the summer" and admitted that this could ultimately result in a change in the dugout.
He responded, "I don't know, and I don't want to talk about players," when asked how he alters the players' mindset in light of his own difficulties doing so. I'm referring to the team's culture, the club culture, and myself.
"I feel like we need to change that and be fearless and strong throughout the summer because there won't be another season like this one.
"We should give the space to other people if we begin this way or if the feeling persists."
He also implied that qualifying for the Champions League would be a problem because of how awful United has been.
"To tell the truth, I don't care about the final," he stated. It's our club's smallest issue by far. This is not the only issue that needs to change.
"We need to understand that we are demonstrating that participating in the Premier League and Champions League is the moon for us at the end of this season.
"I don't care about the outcome. The players will be focused, and I'm not sure if participating in the Champions League is the wisest course of action. Let's consider Chelsea in order to make several improvements.
West Ham is encouraged by the conclusion of their eight-match winless record as United travels to Stamford Bridge on a seven-game league winless streak.
"Very pleasing result, especially in the context of what we've been through," stated boss Graham Potter. The outcomes have not been what we had hoped for, so it has been a difficult few of months.
Although performance hasn't been as poor, you understand how it is. We had to endure suffering in the Premier League if we didn't achieve the desired outcomes.
