When does the Club World Cup begin, and how does it work?

The United States will host a newly redesigned 32-team FIFA Club World Cup beginning in 2025.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has earlier approved the enlargement and new format ahead of the 2022 World Cup final. Twelve European clubs will compete, including the Champions League winners from 2021-24, with Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester City already qualified.

The remaining clubs were decided by a rating during the same four-year period. The remaining 20 slots will be filled by six CONMEBOL clubs, including the Copa Libertadores winners between 2021 and 2024; four CONCACAF teams, primarily the 2021-24 Champions League winners; four clubs from CAF and AFC, also based on the respective Champions League winners; one from OFC - the highest-ranked club from its 2021-24 Champions League winners; and one from the host country.

"The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will represent the zenith of elite professional men's club football. "With the necessary infrastructure in place and a huge local interest, the United States is the ideal host to kick off this new, global tournament," Infantino stated during the FIFA Council meeting. The 21st FIFA Club World Cup will take place from June 15 to July 13, 2025.

The United States will have a busy few years ahead, hosting the 16-time Copa America in 2024 and the 48-team World Cup (together with Canada and Mexico) in 2026.

FIFA will announce the locations for the 2025 event, which are expected to be on the East Coast of the United States due to the Gold Cup being held on the West Coast at the same time. It will follow the classic World Cup structure, with 32 teams divided into eight groups of four.

The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage, where the finals will play a total of seven matches. Teams will have three days off between matches, and there will be no third-place playoff.

FIFPRO, a global organization of professional players, has criticized FIFA's proposal, expressing concerns over player welfare as a result of the additional events on an already congested playing calendar. To allay any anxieties, the tournament would be held every four years rather than once a year.

Who qualified for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup?

So far, 30 teams have reserved a spot with the yet-to-be-announced host team. There is also the provision that if a club wins two or more seasons in their confederation's major club competition, additional teams will be decided by a club ranking over the next four years. In addition, a limit of two clubs per association will be imposed, with an exception for champion clubs if more than two clubs from the same association win their confederation's top club championship.

Liverpool and Manchester United have been denied a place in the expanded tournament, which has a potential prize fund of about £50 million, as FIFA revealed that Manchester City and Chelsea will be the only Premier League teams playing.

Porto and Benfica have qualified, along with Chelsea, Manchester City, and Real Madrid, based on their co-efficient rankings. Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Milan have also secured their berths. Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, and Red Bull Salzburg represent Europe.

The final event, contested under Fifa's current format, was held in Saudi Arabia last December, with Manchester City becoming England's fourth different victor, following Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

In the final, Pep Guardiola's team defeated Fluminense, winners of the 2023 Copa Libertadores, 4-0.

Real Madrid is the competition's most successful club, winning five trophies. Guardiola is a four-time winner, having won twice as Barcelona manager (2009 and 2011) and twice more in command of Bayern Munich (2013) and Manchester City (2023).
